History
The Tournament Players Club at Sawgrass emerged in 1980 as the ambitious centerpiece of a new concept in professional golf—a purpose-built venue designed specifically to showcase tournament play while serving resort guests year-round. The PGA Tour, seeking a permanent home for The Players Championship and greater control over tournament conditions, commissioned this facility as the flagship of what would become the TPC network of courses.
Pete Dye accepted the challenge of transforming 415 acres of Florida marshland into what he termed a “stadium course”—a revolutionary design philosophy that prioritized spectator viewing and television coverage alongside competitive play. Working with the constraints and opportunities of the wetland environment, Dye engineered a layout that could accommodate large galleries while testing the world’s finest players. His approach emphasized precision over power, incorporating the natural water features and elevation changes possible through extensive earthmoving.
Since opening, the Stadium Course has undergone several refinements to maintain its position as host to The Players Championship, often called golf’s “fifth major.” The greens were converted to TifEagle Bermuda grass to improve playing conditions, and yardages have been adjusted over the decades to keep pace with equipment advances. The course has also served as the de facto headquarters of the PGA Tour, with the organization’s offices relocated to the property, cementing Sawgrass’s role as both competitive venue and administrative center of professional golf.
Playing Notes
TPC Sawgrass demands pinpoint accuracy over raw distance, with water hazards affecting 14 holes and narrow Bermuda fairways that severely punish errant drives. The TifEagle greens roll lightning-fast and feature dramatic undulations that make three-putts common if you're on the wrong tier. Wind off the Atlantic constantly shifts direction and intensity, particularly affecting approach shots to elevated greens where club selection becomes critical. The course plays significantly longer than its 7,245 yards due to forced carries over wetlands, strategic bunkering that catches anything offline, and greens that reject aggressive pins with steep run-offs into collection areas. Bring extra balls, play one club up in the wind, and prioritize accuracy off every tee—the Bermuda rough is thick enough to limit recovery options, and the hazard stakes are closer than they appear. Walking is permitted but challenging due to lengthy transitions between holes and Florida heat, so most players opt for carts. Your short game around the greens will determine your score more than driving distance, as the putting surfaces reward conservative approaches and punish bold flag-hunting.
