PGA West

History

The Coachella Valley had already made its name in golf by the mid-1980s, but the developers behind PGA West set out to build something bigger — a golf destination that would rank among the most demanding in the country. The Palmer Course opened in 1986 as part of that ambition, one piece in a growing complex that would eventually carry the PGA West name across multiple layouts and architects. This was resort and residential golf conceived at scale, designed to put La Quinta on the map for players seeking a serious test in the desert sun.

Arnold Palmer brought his name and his design sensibility to the project at a point in his career when his course work was in demand across the country. His approach here favored a more restrained, playable design than some of the other layouts that would rise nearby in the years that followed — a counterpoint to the theatrical difficulty for which PGA West became known. Palmer’s course gave the resort a distinct identity within its own gates, standing apart from the severity found elsewhere on the property.

Over the decades, PGA West has hosted its share of competitive golf and cycled through ownership changes typical of major resort developments, with the broader complex expanding to include additional courses designed by other notable architects. The Palmer Course itself has remained a fixture of the resort’s offerings, continuing to serve both member and visiting play as the surrounding development around it has grown.
