Pelham Country Club
Designed by Devereux Emmet
History
Pelham Country Club opened its gates in 1921, part of that great outward migration of New York clubs seeking room to breathe beyond Manhattan’s tightening borders. Westchester County, still largely pastoral in those years, offered exactly what a growing membership needed: land enough for a proper eighteen, and distance enough to feel like an escape.
The club turned to Devereux Emmet, a designer whose reputation by the early 1920s was well established across the New York metropolitan area. Emmet had built his name on an ability to read a piece of ground honestly, working with what nature provided rather than forcing a template onto unwilling terrain. At Pelham, he had a site with real character to work with, and his routing reflected the practical, unfussy sensibility that made his courses popular with clubs of that era — golf that rewarded shot-making without requiring an engineering degree to understand it.
Like most clubs of its vintage, Pelham has seen its share of maintenance and modernization over the intervening century, though its Emmet-era identity has remained the club’s touchstone. It endures today as a private club, its 1921 origins still legible in the bones of the course even as the decades have layered on their inevitable changes.
Playing Notes
Expect a walk that tests your legs as much as your swing — Pelham's terrain rolls and shifts constantly, and flat lies are hard to come by. The routing climbs and drops through wooded corridors, so club selection matters as much as ball-striking; a level number on your rangefinder rarely tells the whole story once elevation gets factored in. Greens here demand respect on the approach and the putter — expect subtle breaks that are easy to misread from the fairway, so give yourself extra time on the practice green before you start. Bring a caddie or a good GPS system if you can, since blind shots and tree-lined doglegs make local knowledge valuable on a first visit. Comfortable shoes with real support are worth the extra thought given the hills, and while carts are available, walkers should be prepared for a workout alongside the golf.
