Green Lakes State Park

History

Green Lakes State Park owes its golf course to an unusual sponsor: the State of New York itself. Unlike the private clubs and resort developments that account for so much of Robert Trent Jones’s body of work, this course rose from the state park system, built to bring championship-caliber golf to the public at large. That mission — democratic in its aim, ambitious in its execution — set the terms for what Jones would design on this parcel outside Manlius.

Jones came to the commission already established as America’s foremost golf architect, a man whose name was attached to Augusta National’s alterations, Baltusrol, and a growing list of courses that redefined mid-century design. For a state park project, his involvement was something of a coup, lending Green Lakes a pedigree rarely associated with public recreational golf. His work here reflected the same principles he applied elsewhere in his career, adapted to a landscape that state planners had set aside for conservation and public use rather than private membership.

The course has endured as one of the more distinctive entries in New York’s state park system, a rare case where a nationally known architect’s work remained accessible to any golfer willing to pay a public green fee rather than a private initiation. That accessibility, paired with the Jones name, has given the course a standing among public-access designs that few state-run facilities can claim.
